Every author on this planet who is actually worth a crap has had at least one bad review in their lifetime!  That may be a hard pill to swallow but it’s the truth.

Whether you start writing as a wee child, hand that masterpiece over to your third grade teacher thinking you’re the tippity top writer in class, and then get slapped with a D on your report card — OR whether you release your debut novel as a senior feeling so freaking accomplished, like you finally chased your life’s goal, only to be punched in the guts by a reviewer claiming that your book is the worst they have ever read.  The origin of our writing makes no difference.  The hard truth of a literary lifestyle is this:  NOT EVERYONE WILL LIKE YOUR WORK, AND NOT EVERYTHING YOU PRODUCE WILL BE CREAM OF THE CROP!!  After all, we all have to start somewhere. right?

Here is the upside to that kick in the face that shows up in the form of a bad review:

Every time someone tells you something negative about your writing – it might just make you get mean-hearted and over defensive. It may even make you recluse, locking yourself away with a king sized candy bar and a barrel of tears.  BUT ultimately, if you have what it takes to be the best, (and you should!)  you will re-read that negative comment over and over and over until you know without a doubt exactly how to go about fixing the problem, as to never make that same mistake twice.

Take those negative comments with gratitude and use them to your advantage!!  We can’t fix things that we don’t know are broken right?!?  I personally have had to PRY constructive criticism out of a few of my ghost readers, and when I do, the results are epic!!

You can take three different people, have them each read one chapter of a book, and each one’s perception of the story will be entirely different! Use those negative comments in your favor. It might sting a little, and possibly even backhand your ego into its proper place. STACKING UP ALL OF YOUR CRITICISM AS A WRITER, AND THEN TRANSFORMING IT INTO CONSTRUCTIVE IS KEY!!

Good luck with your next big adventure’s and I look forward to learning from my future mistakes, as should you 🙂
