Why Aggressive Personalities Prefer First Person Writing, and Passive Shine in Third.

Have you ever come across a well developed, well written, first person character that you actually loved who wasn’t opinionated? I sure haven’t! And, there’s a logic behind this fact that makes perfect sense.

The best written first person characters pick apart everything around them. They notice details, and they have a unique outlook on each and every said detail.  This personality trait isn’t merely imagined, its developed.  A writer cannot just think about their characters picking apart their surroundings, they have to own the skill themselves. Being a truly observant and opinionated individual requires a certain mental skill.  Once that particular mentality is mastered, it can be shared with the alternating personalities of your characters.

To write great first person, you have to really dive into the characters head. To write the best first person you need to be an extremely opinionated person in order to master portraying that particular trait in another.

Third person writing is a whole other kind of beast. The ability to accept and understand a variety of opinions is preferable. You need to see the world as an outsider looking in rather than an insider looking out. Third person writers are more often than not quiet observers, only speaking up or out when its necessary rather than on impulse.  They’re a different kind of wise, and consider all prospective before voicing an opinion.

Third person writers mentally tell a story, they don’t mentally experience it.

Each and every writer’s personality varies, just like each and every piece of literature is unique. And yes, of course there are some who are lucky enough (and smart enough) to shine in both writing perspectives.  Saying that they’re well-rounded would be an understatement. What I’m suggesting, is that we look at the numbers, the statistics, and make study of the writing produced, based on personality types.

Now, I’m no physiological expert.  I didn’t go to Harvard or study the inner workings of the human brain. Nor have I ever studied behavioral analysis in a classroom. Ever…  But I’m a writer, and an observer. (an opinionated one obviously)  So, based on my observations and elaborated opinion, I honestly believe to my very core that individuals who prefer first person usually have aggressive personalities, while writers who prefer third person tend to be passive.
