Stand Alone Sunday 3/12/17 My Pick: Carrie, by Stephen King

Standalone Sunday is a meme created by Megan at BookslayerReads. Where each Sunday you feature a book that is a standalone (not a part of a series) that you really like and would recommend to others. (Visit the BookSlayerReads page for more info).

standalone-1

The reason behind my choice (not a review):

Carrie was the very first Stephen King book I ever read. Clearly I was an instant fan, and still am to this day!  I absolutely love King and I love this book in particular. Well worth the read!! It’s a classic for a reason!

DESCRIPTION:

Stephen King’s legendary debut, about a teenage outcast and the revenge she enacts on her classmates.

Carrie White may be picked on by her classmates, but she has a gift. She can move things with her mind. Doors lock. Candles fall. This is her power and her problem. Then, an act of kindness, as spontaneous as the vicious taunts of her classmates, offers Carrie a chance to be a normal…until an unexpected cruelty turns her gift into a weapon of horror and destruction that no one will ever forget.

      1. It hit a real personal note for me because my mother was abusive and although I had friends, I was also the victim of bullying in school.

      2. That’s awful! I can definitely see how this book would leave an impression then, relating emotionally with a book is always so powerful! I’m so sorry you had to go through that 😦 People can be so ruthless, I’ve never really understood it. I was very blessed with a great family and strong circle of friends (I think being raised in a very small town made a big difference) so I never experienced such trauma personally, but I never stood for it either. My mom used to tease me about picking up random friends. I always veered toward taking in those who struggled with bullies, I’m one of those extra empathy souls 😉

      3. Thanks Didi. I have some good memories especially surrounding my dad. He’s the one who inspired my passion for reading and how important it is. I’m glad you were surrounded by love. It’s obvious that you’re an empathy soul!🤗
