This Really Happened, by Annmarie McQueen is jam packed with layer after layer of authentically written emotion. The characters are developed, relatable and loveable. I fell completely head over heals with Annmarie’s writing style and flow. The plot points are original, gripping, and heartfelt. The entire story just feels so real, I couldn’t help but to wonder if the Author had in fact experienced similar circumstances. I had a hard time believing this was actually a fictional piece. It’s a beautifully torn YA story, and in my opinion a must read.
Erin, the main character, is very intelligent, complex, and a bit of an introvert. She doesn’t necessarily lack confidence, but has always played it safe preferring solitude and staying out of trouble. Her sister Naomi is the free spirit of the family, leaving Erin to carry the burden of responsibility. Erin enters a University and is thrown in the mix with five room mates, so there are six of them total three boys and three girls. Each one brings something unique and down to earth to the story line. It feels real. They become very close friends, which naturally brings about laughs and cries, great times and hard times. Like most college students they’re young and free, trying to find themselves among partying and heavy study in the pursuit of a secure future.
Together the group is able to pull Erin out of her shell, but more so Allen than the rest. There’s a spark between Erin and Allen that is completely undeniable. He is mysterious and confident in everything, so naturally Erin is drawn to him, assuming the attraction is mutual. Ultimately their pull to one another causes a deep routed strain among the tight-nit group of friends.
When tragedy strikes, Erin is forced into a very dark and confusing emotional state. She copes in ways that could only be understood through her own justification and perception of reality. This is where and how the book is set apart from anything I’ve ever read. Erin’s way of separating reality from an alternate preference -and life’s turn of events – is beautifully thought provoking. I was sucked right into her depth.
Normally, I don’t particularly like books that bounce from one time frame to another, but with This Really Happened it totally works. I absolutely loved everything about this book! This is the first of Annmarie’s stories that I’ve ever read, and I cant wait to dive into her previous novels. I’m also holding my breath to see what will come out of her head next!

Erin has spent her life drifting, ruled by her controlling parents and social anxiety. That is, until she meets her new University flatmate Allen. Reckless, eccentric and creative, Allen is everything Erin doesn’t have the courage to be and she’s immediately drawn to him. She’s sure he feels the attraction too, until he starts dating their mutual friend Charlotte instead. Then one night changes everything. When a drunken mistake leaves Charlotte fighting for her life, there’s only one question everyone’s asking: what really happened? Erin has an answer to that, more than one in fact, but running from the truth is far easier than facing up to it…
