I’ve mentioned before that I’m from a small town. What I haven’t mentioned is that its a small “Mormon town” in Utah. That’s right folks I was raised by an LDS family and I grew up having a certain perception of right and wrong pounded in my head. I however, am one hard headed individual, and somehow developed my own opinion, as many of us “sinners” do… Weird right? lol
To make things worse, not only do I NOT believe in a religion that’s so big on Joseph Smith, but I also like to drink wine and beer, and I write sweary books with naughty scenes in them! *** Insert Gasp Here***
The point of this post isn’t to show what a rebel I am, or even to encourage those weirdo’s who think its cool to do naughty things merely for the attention. I actually hate that. There is nothing that drives me nuts more that a phony or a fake…
There’s another BIG thing this post is NOT: and that’s an attack on religion, LDS or any other. (As I’m sure to get a little backlash. But whatever.) There are a lot of people that I respect, look up to, and absolutely adore who are LDS… As well as many other religions I don’t believe in, so please don’t misconstrue my point.
The message I’m trying to get across here is BE YOURSELF! Write the things you WANT to write about, and do it with all the confidence in the world. Individuality is a beautiful thing! Don’t let the opinions of others veer you from what you want to do, and who you want to be.
Of course I have some family that don’t approve of some of my writing. I also have some neighbors, and even work colleagues who may be just a tiny bit judgey. My response to their disagreement is that, well, not everyone likes the same movies or music either. One book isn’t always for everyone. And besides, I only have 1 adult book out of 3 (soon to be 4) and it really isn’t even that bad. Trust me, it could be much much MUCH more adult if I had wanted it to. I was shooting for real, not disgusting. And in my opinion I NAILED IT!
So write what you want to write and how you want to write!! There is no right or wrong when it comes to fiction… There is only creativity, individuality, and unique beauty. Don’t let other people’s opinion effect your topic. Write in a way that best reflects what you’re personally capable of! Find a subject, and a pace that you’re comfortable with, hash out that first draft, and then transform it into a MASTERPIECE! I promise if you write what you want, and do it with passion, then it WILL attract the right audience. If there are people that disagree with the reflection you are putting across then that’s their problem. Someone else’s opinion of us as writers is none of our business. BE YOU!!
So there you have it!
If you want to write about religion and God, then do it!
If you want to write an adult romance, then do it!!
If you want to swear in your novel, then do it!!!
If you want to write something hot and steamy, then do it!!
No mater what it is you want to write, don’t hold back. JUST DO IT!!
CHOOSE THE WRITE, MY FRIENDS!!! AND GET TO IT!!!
God bless you! Love your authenticity!

Sadly, I completely agree. I wish more people would care more about their own individuality and intuition rather than worrying so much about what others think. Thanks for reading BTW 🙂

Yes as anyone wanting to be a writer you can’t worry about what others think and if you write naughty scenes our minds think a like! Lol

There is a lot of wisdom in your words about writing.
I suppose my head is as hard as yours. 🙂 Never did fit into the religion box very well…or the atheist box…or the agnostic box. Where I fit comes under the heading “spiritual.” That’s where my “self” was found.

I was raised agnostic but im 25 and have been a jack mornon convert for 4 years as far as my ysa is concerned and I’ve always been a writer and who I am and not the horrific person I thought I was before I met heavenly father. I make the ysa uncomfortable but what’s it’s important is I know what God wants for me and I have much worse to work on than all the non lds things I do daily especially in writing. Doctrineand culture gets blurred. Point is I loved this post bc I can sort of relate in my own way as a writer and Mormon…Ish? A follower of Christ.

I’m glad you took this post the way it was intended, as a pave your own path with confidence message. I was hopping not to offend any LDS, so I’m actually very glad for your comment 🙂 .. thank you, and the best of luck with your writing as well!

Didi I loved this! I am LDS but some of my favourite people are not LDS. Just because we may have different views on things does not mean that we can’t respect each other and what we chose to right about. Sometimes I get a lot of backlash for writing about God just like you get backlash for writing sweary books with naughty scenes in them. Haters gonna hate. Keep it up!

Awesome! I’m glad you liked it! You just keep on writing about God too. I love that you know what you want to write, and what your comfortable writing.. isn’t confidence the best!?! 😍😎

I read my writing buddy’s post and wondered if she’s having a hard time? Or being judged for her writing style. I’ll be the first one to back the points she’s making in this post. Her writing style is too similar to mine to not feel her anger at being judged. She swears in her writing, she writes about controversial topics, she has portrayed a male serial killer. And that’s why I love her. That’s why fell in love with her work. After she read mine, I read hers and there’s mutual author respect. If you can’t handle a cuss word or two,if you can’t handle a serial killer or two, if you can’t handle a steamy sex scene… or two or three in my case. The read damn chick-lit it’s as simple as that!

What a fantastic post! As writers of fiction we depict life as humans, in all our complexities and that includes everyone and everything that humans can conceive of. Humans are still becoming human and as they mature so do their religious beliefs over a long period of time. We have a long way to go. I was raised in a Catholic, Protestant, Jewish, Buddhist, and a Philosophically Non-Believers family. It lead to very interesting family discussions and hysterically funny too. For me, I am waiting for the right religion to come along – just kidding. K D 🙂

I also want to say, Didi, I read Aggravated Momentum (5* rating) and it is perfectly written. Shocking how some people react to reality because in real life your Aggravated Momentum is real, your writing is authentic, you are authentic. Please just ignore the gossipy rabble from those who don’t have a glue what writing fiction is all about. You are a great writer and so, Choose The Write! (What a wonderful Slogan!) Karen 🙂

This post, “Choose The Write” by Didi Oviatt, is a must reblog. She stands for so many of us writers who cherish our freedom to write, what we see, what we know, how we feel, about what needs to be written in the light of day or the darkness of night. Authenticity as a writer is true creativity with out the bonds of convention that tie it down to simplistic platitudes. Please read what author Didi Oviatt says with amazing authenticity

I actually really love living in Utah! It’s such a beautiful place. If you’re a hunting/fishing/camping outdoorsy type then I’m confident you’ll love it too! Depending on where exactly you want to go religion can dominate certain small town, but either way, I personally wouldn’t want to live anywhere else! (except I would KILL for the alcohol content of beer to be higher 😉 lol)

Everything you have written here is so true. People should just stop judging, that’s what it all comes down to in the end. If you don’t like something than simply don’t read it, or at least have the respect for someone else’s opinion, instead of forcing your own on someone. I would never be judgemental about someone who has an entirely different view than myself. So? It’s great isn’t it? It’s what makes us all unique. If everyone were the same the world would become a rather dull place. Needless to say: I loved this post: everything about it just felt right and true: awesome stuff 😊

Thank you, I’m glad you loved it! It’s such a touchy subject to address. It really is sad how afraid people are to be themselves, scared at how people will treat them, especially the younger generations. I feel like as long as I can instill a good sense of confidence in individuality at least into my kids then I win! 🙂

“and somehow developed my own opinion, as many of us “sinners” do…” 😂😂😂 this is why I love you. Ha ha! I understand completely. I grew up in a strictly Catholic household. That only caused me to go out and do my own research and form my own opinions even more! I think it’s great to write what you know, and spread what you’ve learned even if others may disagree.
That’s what’s becoming wrong with this world now… People are so afraid to open their mouths as they may offend someone. Well, guess what? Someone is ALWAYS going to have a problem with anything we say. It’s the not saying it, though, that will bring about the downfall of society!

AMEN! I’m so sick of everyone being offended all the time. It doesn’t really mater who says what…. someone will inevitably be offended lol. It’s a good thing we’re all adults now; we can figure things out for ourselves and ignore the things we don’t like haha

Awesome post! There are times suffocating self-doubt creeps its way into the writer’s psyche. I too, write what I want and what I feel I am capable of – just as you stated. And even with fewer reads and comments than most, it is my way of being creative and it gives me joy to bring the stories to life.
