I’m Totally Freaking Out Here!

For the first time in my life I’m going to give a public speech about my writing! Whew, even just typing that, and/or saying it out loud, gives me a weird mix of excitement AND anxiety! My nerves are eating me from the inside out. The closest I’ve ever come to giving a ‘talk’ is a few times in church as a kid, and a couple of PowerPoint presentations at the day job. On the latter and most recent of the two, there were less than ten people in the room and I honest to God had a stomach ache for a week surrounding the event.

(I can do this. I can do this. I can do this)

That’s me ^^^ convincing myself that I’m not a total and complete wimp!

I don’t do speeches, I’m scared to death of speaking in public! How ironic that I just had a conversation and even wrote a post about artists fears and facing them.  I had had a conversation with a fellow artist about our fears being the biggest career killers. The notion got me to thinking, and I couldn’t agree more. So here I am facing my fears.

giphy...

It’s kind of funny how these things line up. Oddly enough it was a goal of mine to step out of my comfort zone in 2018, and attend events if and when possible. I even threw in the official written list of accomplishments to come that I wanted to volunteer with kids and young adults.

The things we manifest, right?!

USU (Utah State University) is a college close to my home. A few weeks after I sat down and took the time to line out my goals for 2018, I was actually tagged in a random post on FB. The post was one put in place by a librarian at USU, reaching out to local authors.  After being tagged by a reader of my work, I responded to the post and let her know that I was in fact an established local author and would be very interested in whatever bookish shenanigans they had in mind. All that she said was she’d be in touch.

WELL… over the weekend, she did indeed get back in touch with me. She asked if I’d actually give a twenty minute talk at a student event!!!

Breath Didi, breath!

I suppose it all boils down to one question. And, no that is not a question of ‘whether or not I can do it’. It isn’t ‘whether or not I’ll survive’. It also isn’t ‘how worthy is a girl who never even attended college to be teaching anything at all to college students’ either!  The question is this: HOW BADLY DO I ACTUALLY WANT TO REACH MY ULTIMATE GOAL OF A NYT BEST SELLING AUTHOR?

Things like little 20 minutes talks are minor. They’re stones to jump, small obstacles, little fish. It might feel like a huge life altering thing right now, because I am indeed scared shitless! But, if somehow I can manage to keep the finish line in my sights, then I can totally do this.  The event isn’t until April 10th, so I totally have time to prepare myself. That also gives me plenty of time to stock up on the booze I’ll need to drink myself into a coma afterwards!! lol JK…. kinda 😉

Wish me luck, and I hope this has inspired someone ANYONE to also step up and step out of their comfort zone. If I can do this you can. Together, lets help each other to make our lives better tomorrow than it is today.

Didi, our fellow blogger and author extraordinaire, is preparing to give her first public speech about her writing. A rather daunting prospect, I think we can all agree. If you have time, please visit her and show her some love and encouragement!

  4. Congratulations! You’re going to totally rock it! Those twenty minutes will go by really fast and really slow at the same time and at the end you’ll be like, “Whew! That wasn’t so bad. Must buy one of those large Hershey bars that weigh like a pound to totally celebrate.”. 😀

    1. Oh my gosh your encouragement is amazing! I think once my nerves die down, I’ll totally be okay. I told the lady that as long as I’m not first on the roster, I then I should be able to pull it off lol!

I would so be the same way. Being the first one up has its advantages, but I would rather have a couple of people of ahead of me, just to give me a chance to see how they do (and to settle my nerves) . 😀

When I was a union organisor, I had to give lots of speeches, often to fairly large crowds. I have also had to make a Best Man’s speech seven times! My tip is not to read from notes. Be natural, say what you feel, and don’t look as if you are just reading out loud.
I have every confidence you will nail it.
    Best wishes, Pete.

    1. Great advice! I’ve always hated watching people talk when they’re dull and reading…. Especially those monotone types lol. Congrats on so many best man speaches!! WOW I’ve been in 8 wedding lines myself, but only one little talk and I’d had a few drinks in me so it was a breeze lol

The very best to you Didi. Keep it in your mind that you’re w keep it in your mind that your writing was well enough liked that you were invited to do this speech. It will give you a little more confidence.

  8. Ha! and good girl.

I’m with Pete and think that best talkifications come from a place of knowing and not from a set of Powerpoint slides. You know your books, you know your process so have a sense of what you do want to share (the ways in which you hope to twist those little lives Muhaha) and put it aside.

When going on stage people used to ask me if I was nervous. I don’t want to talk about this. I don’t want to think about this. I will simply do it when the time comes. And I did. And every time I got good applause and people coming up after.

    🙂

    1. Oh I plan on twisting those little lives for sure LOL!! Thanks for the confidence booster the other day, I was hoping this post would reach you!

Going on stage like you did must have been exhilarating! I’m glad you always got an applause, I’m pretty worried about hearing crickets.

  9. I can’t say I have given as many public speeches as beetleypete but my trick is don’t look down at your audience especially if on a stage and if on a floor level look above their heads to the back of the room. I learned this from grade and high school drama classes. Tell them less about yourself and more about your book, first. Don’t use notes. People are keenly watching and if they feel you don’t know what your own book is about then why should they buy it. Speak naturally. Most people aren’t rude or will try to ask trip-you-up questions. Most are rather nice and interested in learning more about your work. Humor never hurt. If the character said something funny. It’s ok to mimic or quote your character. Make them love your characters as much as you love them. 🙂

  10. A wonderful opportunity, Didi. I do a lot of public speaking and training in my job. Work out the points you want to make and go with the flow. Engage with the audience and allow them to ask questions and participate.

  11. Just keep breathing! Admitting you’re nervous can help and practicing your speech will help. Be excited, be humbled, be yourself! And expect that you might trip a bit but you won’t actually land on your face!

    Good luck!

  16. One of the main things to do beforehand is to spend time writing down all you want to share and then reading, re-reading, re-reading it many times. Best done in front of a mirror and out loud. You may feel silly but it is well worth the practice and the hearing of your voice. Will also highlight any weak points in the presentation. Hope that helps. Wish you all the best,

    1. Oh that’s a wonderful idea! I’ll absolutely give it a try. I worry about saying trip up things like ‘um’ ‘uh’ and stumbling over myself. So, this will probably help me with that too!
