I came across the challenge of this wonderful Read-a-Thon over on The Bookworm Drinkith Blog. Nicole, said drinkith(ing) bookworm, has teamed up with Kathy @ Pages Below the Vaulted Sky. Together they have started a sort of Terry Pratchett reading group. If you’d like to join then DO!! See HERE for more details!
So far I’m impressed and intend on following along monthly. I’ll be reviewing book 2 next month… on the 27rd of course, as the (last Monday of the month from August on) as the rules state. 🙂 So stay tuned!!
My Review: 4 of 5 stars
This book is so utterly unique that it’s borderline genius… but in a wonky way. I’m almost embarrassed to admit that it’s taken my entire 33 years of life to actually get started on reading the late legendary Terry Pratchett. When I agreed to jump into a Discworld review a month group, I was secretly excited to have an excuse to read such a HUGE series. I think that’s why I’ve always put it off, because honestly who has the time for the kind of commitment? Being the ‘blame it on someone else’ type of human I am… I saw this very excuse as an opportunity. I’m also excited that you don’t necessarily need to read all of the Discworld books in order either, so that if I need to skip a month I totally can. See, my commitment issue is solved!
Anyhow, I thought that The Color of Magic was an excellent opener for an adventure so completely out of this world! Rincewind is my favorite character. The failed wizard is extremely witty, and straight forward with an upside-down approach to cliché and banter. He and Twoflower, the odd tourist from no one really knows where, together make a hilarious pair! In a lot of ways Twoflower doesn’t have a whole lot of common sense, so Rincewind is the perfect guide for him.
From cover to cover the story is lighthearted fun, and the humor is fresh. The setting is most definitely one of a find. It’s like this medley of typical fantasy references that have been blended and flipped into far fetched places and random events. There’s magic, awkwardness, fun chaos, witty banter, and even close calls that leave your head spinning.
I’m so excited to keep on a trucking along with the Discworld series! I’ve heard that the books only get better and better which has my curiosity running in circles!
DESCRIPTION:
Terry Pratchett’s profoundly irreverent, bestselling novels have garnered him a revered position in the halls of parody next to the likes of Mark Twain, Kurt Vonnegut, Douglas Adams, and Carl Hiaasen. The Color of Magic is Terry Pratchett’s maiden voyage through the now-legendary land of Discworld. This is where it all begins — with the tourist Twoflower and his wizard guide, Rincewind.

It really does huh!? Like a support team! Although I do have a feeling after reading this first book that making it through all 41 won’t be quite as challenging as I expected lol 🤔😍

I’m so glad you liked it! Rincewind and Twoflower are definitely like “the blind leading the blind”!! 😂😂 I loved all of the trouble Twoflower managed to get himself into, and leaving poor Rincewind (and that wonderful luggage!) to get him out of it!
I’m so happy I decided to do this because it’s been SO MUCH FUN checking out everyone’s posts and seeing the differences in opinions!! 💖💖

I’m glad you decided to too! I may have never dove into this series otherwise, and I’m definitely hooked already! I’ll be reading everyone’s reviews this afternoon, I’m so curious to see what everyone else thought too. Rincewood is the best 😂

Haha..I just read the post on Nicole’s blog…and I just said that I have never read a book by Terry Pratchett. Yes I know…I am deeply ashamed. I’m already prepared for the backlash these comments will create lol😂😂 But the good thing is, in this way, with these posts I at least now know in which order to read these books 😂😂

Haha…I wish I could but next month I have a pretty big blogging project coming up which I will be hosting. But I will definitely keep it in mind, that’s for sure. I have always wanted to read something by Pratchett anyway 😊😊 Also…did not know that, thanks for informing me about that 😀😀

Oh yes what a pair Twoflower and Rincewind! They just work well together though… especially with The Luggage tagging along. Lol. The set up is so good. I am definitely going to try a later one. Nicole insists they only get better! 😄
