So, I toyed with the idea of writing a romantic comedy for some time now. I’ve been torn between my love of suspense and my love of, well, love. I read a lot of romance, in fact my two current favorite authors are all about romance. I’ve also dabbled with a few romantic short stories and bit of emotional pull between certain characters in my thrillers. I’m not a stranger to creating sex scenes, and insta-love tends to be an issue for me *face-palm*.
This November I decided to take the plunge into committing to NaNoWriMo for the first time ever. Along with far too outrageous of word count goals, I threw my hands in the air and said f**k it… I’m ready to be a big fat traitor and write something completely different than I’ve ever done. If I’m going to write a love story than so be it. I’ll write a long one, no Insta involved. I stocked up on coffee, mentally prepared myself to allow my house to be a messy wreck for a month, and set to work!
I’m a big fan of pushing one’s boundaries and testing the waters where insecurities fester in order to get past them. One of my goals for the year of 2019 was to improve dialogue, and to write something challenging. So here I go, trying my hand at possibly the most playful and sarcastic – soon to be cougar – in the history of romance. Her name is Carla, she’s a forty one year old divorse-ie who’s decided after years of being alone to finally put herself on the market… she’s a pep.
I love Carla! It’s day four of the National Writing Month challenge, I’m just over 3k words in and I’m THRILLED that I’m finally throwing myself into something this year! It’s been a rough year for me in many ways. Mentally and emotionally I was in a strange place for several months. Along with my inability to force my mind into functionality, I lost my knack to write anything besides poetry. My thoughts were a jumbled mess. That’s not to mention that I moved. Moving and remodeling demanded every second of my time. Needless to say, this whole year has taken me in every direction thinkable aside from my passion.
I’m happy to announce that IM FINALLY completely and utterly buried in a project. It’s a fun, lighthearted project, and it’s everything that I need right now!! There will be no insta-love here, nor murder, or sociopaths, or just flat out blood and gore. No sir-ree. This book is all about quirky pizazz, sprinkled with smart wit, and then swept into a pile of dirty flare. There will be much build up to the lovin, along with some good ol’ awkward embarrassment. I love this project so far, so wish me luck!?!
What about you, WP folks? Anyone else battling through NaNo, armed with coffee and wine? (find me if you are, my handle is DidiOviatt, one word). ASLO are there any other traitors here? Genre hopping book lovers who have some random characters, out of the regular line up, who are clawing their way to the surface? Tell me all about your projects, hopefully I’m not alone in my turncoat ways 😉
I loathe this modern idea that genre is a rigid set of borders that cannot be crossed. Unless you are a Hipster then you can say you listen to both Rap & Trap and claim how multi-faceted you are! Sigh.
Do what you are driven to and let the details sort themselves. Steven King has played in several sandpits and that doesn’t detract any from his abilities. Matter of fact it is nice to see.

Right?! I couldn’t agree more! Plus its fun to try new things. Maybe humans in general would be happier if we pushed our own boundries a bit more often 😉

I’m doing NaNo this year too. My code name is A J Karian. I’m not skipping genres. As a matter of fact, my NaNo story is an off shoot of my Ambrose and Elsie story. A sort of prequel. It’s all about the tragic backstory for one of my vampires, Raven. I figured it was well-past time for him to get his own story out there. 😆

Awesome! I just went to find you without realizing you beat me to it lol. We’re officially NaNo buddies! 🤩🤓
Sounds like Raven NEEDS his own story!

Hahaha! I feel like I should say, “Tag! You’re it!” 😆
I’m so happy to be finally writing Raven’s story and I’m having so much fun writing it! I started off when he and his future love interest were kids and it will slowly build up to them all grown up.
It definitely has a different feel and sound to it when compared to my Ambrose and Elsie story. But that just makes it more interesting to write.
Only thing is I need to keep remembering to call him James instead of Raven. He hasn’t been turned into Raven just yet. 😉

Ohhhhh so it’s like a coming of age vampire story!! THAT sounds promising 😍

Absolutely! I’m having so much fun writing it. It helps that I know the two main characters pretty well at this point. So, it is very easy to write in their voices. 😀

On a complete side note, I’m working on getting Hildreth and Elsie married right now.
I’ve been worried about how it was going to turn out. I worried that after all the drama surrounding Ambrose’s wedding, Hildreth’s wedding would feel anticlimactic.
But I am having so much fun writing it. Hildreth is being very Hildreth and it just makes me happy. 😀
