The Maze Cutter (Hardcover/ Kindle/ Audio Editions)
Expected Publication Date: November 15th, 2022
Genre: YA Dystopian/ Teens
Publisher: Akashic Media Enterprises
Seventy-three years after the events of THE DEATH CURE, when Thomas and other
immunes were sent to an island to survive the Flare-triggered apocalypse, their descendants
have thrived. Sadina, Isaac, and Jackie all learned about the unkind history of the Gladers

from The Book of Newt and tall tales from Old Man Frypan, but when a rusty old boat shows
up one day with a woman bearing dark news of the mainland–everything changes. The group
and their islander friends are forced to embark back to civilization where they find Cranks
have evolved into a more violent, intelligent version of themselves. The islanders are hunted
by the Godhead, the Remnant Nation, and scientists with secret agendas. When they cross
paths with an orphan named Minho from the Remnant Nation, the dangers become real and
they don’t know who they can trust. The islanders will have to survive long enough to figure
out why they are being targeted, who is friend or foe, and what the Godhead has planned for
the future of humanity.

MY REVIEW 4 STARS:

Taking the generational route was a genius move for James Dashner! I mean, how do you take something so big, famous, and seemingly complete and then add on to it years latter? I’ll tell you how James did it….. He painted a whole new story of what life would be nearly a century later. It’s like the ultimate start to a follow up so to speak. That said, I didn’t read all of the previous books to the Maze Runner series.

To be honest, I lost interest in the middle of book 3, and even this was years ago. At the time, I struggled to keep my head in the Maze game and I really debated on reviewing this as I felt like I was joining the crew of reviewers a step behind. Lucky for me, it still came together nicely! I want to thank James and Reads & Reels Book Tours for providing me with a free copy of this book in exchange of an honest review.

This book jumps around a lot. From the Godhead, to the decedents, to everyone else that is after those who have grown up immune and oblivious. Happenings over the years have gotten out of control literally everywhere that isn’t their secluded little island – so the writing really does jump from one extreme to another. Thankfully, it all comes together, with twists and shocks galore, but the jumping can STILL be kind of difficult. It seemed like every time I felt really engulfed in a scene and truly attached to the characters, it would switch to something completely different.

I think my favorite aspect of the entire book is the journal entries of Newt! In my opinion they are the sole (and soul) attachment to The Maze Runner and it actually gives credit to where credit is due. I really like the dynamics of Miyoko and Issac, two friends who happen to be amongst the small group of friends to discover the ship that changed life as they all knew it. they are most definitely the best characters of the entire story.

The stumbling upon this ship is one of my favorite parts of the book. This is where things actually start to make sense and the pace of the book picks up. A group of young islanders who have lived their entire life secluded from the evils of this world and the next, find themselves face to face with an ominous Ship with the name ‘Maze Cutter’ etched in rust along the side. There are dead bodies on the deck of the ship and its up to the group to watch the giant foreign boat as well as alarm the rest of the islanders.

Something inside of them is instantly aware that the appearance of this ship is about to change everything. They were right to have their suspicions as death, destruction and all things evil are about to take charge. Can they make it past the clutches of everyone who is out to get them, including the all powerful herself? I don’t want to give anything away, but I will tell you that nothing is as it seems!! 4 stars for me 🙂
