Last Chapter Writing Blues

Do any of my fellow novelists here on WP get delayed at the end of their books? I’ve been stuck on the very last chapter of my WIP for a couple of weeks now. Not because I don’t know what I want to do with it… I actually know EXACTLY what I want to happen, and in very vivid detail too. My problem right now is that I’m struggling to sit down and focus on the actual words. Sentence by sentence, word for word, I’m juuussssttt not satisfied. I’m in this weird last chapter rut of sorts, and its killing me!! Very very slowly I’m plummeting to my doom!

Perhaps it’s because with my previous books I’ve been so excited to be so close to finished, that I’ve always knocked out the endings quick. Probably a little too quick to be honest! This go around, I’m lingering… teetering the edge of completion with what tastes like a single grain of salt and a double shot of tequila. I hate straight shooting tequila! The taste is awful, and it makes me mean and emotional… (Margarita’s are totally different, so let’s not compare) I’m using a tequila comparison because it feels so much like I’m swallowing the burn of the ending of this book with a gag and a cry!  I even had it practically finished at one point, and then decided I could do better and deleted about twenty pages lol… That’s how nuts I am right now, with this mother loving book!

Oh, and I’m pretty sure I have strep throat… GO ME!

Anyhow, today is the day that I’m going to sit on my ass at the computer and make something work, because I woke up this morning with a bit of a drive. I’m going to use it! I’m going to do my best to get past this awkward book ending pit that I’ve allowed myself to get sucked into! Wish me luck.

Does anyone else ever have this problem? Or even something similar?  Please tell me that I’m not alone in this!

Didi: You’re probably just not drinking the right tequila. I’m betting I can change your mind on this one. 😉

I’m hoping the block is just about the ending and not being caused by anything earlier in the draft.

    Good luck today.

    1. HAHA you could be right on the tequila, Brian! I do love me a good mixed drink with it. Not sure what the trouble is, but I really struggle getting the shots down LOL
Thanks for the well wishes, so far so good today… Hopefully I can keep up the momentum! 🙂

I wish you luck for two reasons. Firstly you write so well and your diction always on point. Secondly, I’m encouraging myself by wishing you well to be able to churn out the books inside of me I don’t yet have the courage to start writing.

So, I chose the lazy and what I thought as clever way of going round it. Writing it in piecemeal on WP article form. Hope to be able to piece them together to make that book I’ve been longing to write.

Hope this encourages you some ?! All the best.

    1. I have total faith that you can piece together a book! Thank you so much for the encouragement, I really needed it today! 🙂

All I can say is: you can do it! I am of course not a writer (well not counting my blog, but I would hardly call that professional lol), but I do at times find it hard to wrap up a review. Sometimes what works is just to take a small break and do something else, and then get back to it.
But I wish you good luck: as I said: You can do it, I have faith in you 😊

Thank you so much, it’s really kind of you to say this. I do my best, but when compared to you I really am an amateur. Your writing skills are simply amazing. Hope you wil be able to finish the story 😊

  4. Dear Didi

Take a pause once in a while and new ideas and inspirations will come – this cannot be forced, just relax and you will come to a wonderful end 🙂

    Best of luck

    1. Didi, I couldn’t agree more! Breaks are most certainly the maker and breaker of a good writer. You hit the nail on the head, my friend 🙂

  5. I have not as yet had this particular problem, Didi. Finding time to write generally is my biggest problem. I think you are over analyzing it. Just know it out and worry about the detail afterwards.

    1. Oh man, I hear ya! Finding the time is a fickle beast! Great advice, thanks a ton! I’ll take all that I can get 😉

  6. I have never started a manuscript without knowing what my ending would be. So, I have never had that problem. Best of luck.

    1. I wish I had that kind of discipline! I always have my mind made up going in too. But, then once I get buried in the story I wind up changing my mind for something I think is better. lol I’m a bit scattered, but such is life I suppose lol

      1. Smiling. I never outline. But I find the ending to the story, then come up with a contrasting beginning and use that as my road map.

      2. Oh, I love this tactic! I usually start with a character type, then come up with a fitting twist to work around second… I’ve tried outlining and it was a bitter fail LOL

  7. Didi, I’ve loved everything you’ve written, so I know you’ll push past this. That said, maybe a small break wouldn’t be a bad idea, especially as your sick. You need to take care of yourself.🤗

    1. Oh definitely! I’m actually going to be camping this weekend. I intend on a full unplug, full of fresh mountain air, star gazing, and reading a paperback in the sun. It does wonders for me every time. Can’t wait! XOXO 🤗😊

  8. I will second that advice for a break. Maybe have a few Margaritas too. Your writing is always terrific.
